The Marist Community
Fraternity & Sorority Life At Marist
Welcome to Marist! We are excited you have selected Marist and hope Greek Life is one way you will become involved and stay connected to the Marist community.
Fraternity & Sorority life began in 1776, with five students at the College of William & Mary who founded Phi Beta Kappa, the first organization to call itself a fraternity. Although fraternities and sororities have evolved over time their core concepts, principals, and values of brotherhood/sisterhood, service, scholarship, and leadership remain.
The Marist Fraternity and Sorority community is comprised of seven Greek Organizations- three fraternities and four sororities with over 300 members. Involvement in Greek Life will give you the opportunity to participate in leadership positions within your chapter, governing councils, philanthropy and service, organize social functions, and become an active leader on campus.
Please take a moment to look through the information presented on this website. Our hope is that you will become involved on campus and strongly consider participating in our Greek community.
Who We Are
A community is comprised of many different elements. There are over 300 members belonging to seven chapters. Members have the opportunity to become involved within their organization in a variety of ways. Some may also select to be a representative or serve on the boards of our two councils. Here you can learn about all of the elements that come together and make the Marist Greek community.

Community Service, Philanthropy & Events
The Greek community devotes their time, skills, and talents to serve others through philanthropy, fundraising, and service (to the campus, local, regional and national communities). Each of the seven chapters at Marist frequently participates either nationally and/or supports local and regional agencies throughout the year-all for great causes.
Greek Council and Sorority Council also work to support the local community of Poughkeepsie in community-wide service projects. The councils also work to support the community service, philanthropy, and events of each chapter. If you are a chapter philanthropy or service chair looking for more opportunities please contact Greek Affairs.
Suspended or Unrecognized Groups
The Office of Student Activities would like to advise all students and parents/guardians that there are some groups that attempt to function as a Greek organization but are not recognized by the College. We discourage students from attending events or affiliating with these unrecognized or suspended groups:
- Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) - Unrecognized by Marist
- Alpha Phi Delta (APD) - Unrecognized by Marist
If you are approached by or have knowledge of groups not regonized by the college but are recruiting or holding meetings please notify the Office of Student Activities at 845-575-3279. Marist does not advise or control the actions of these groups and has notified their headquarters or leadership that they may not associate themselves with Marist and are not recognized by the college.
