Emerging Leaders Program FAQs
How and when did the Emerging Leaders Program begin at Marist?
The First Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) at Marist occurred in 2004 when 35 students attended a weekend Leadership Retreat. That model was changed to a non-credit leadership certificate program for the 2005-2006 academic year. In 2006-2007, Marist received a one-semester grant allowing it to sign on with the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS).
A partnership was formed affording participants an opportunity to earn recognition at Marist while also qualifying for lifetime membership in a network of over 82,000 college and university students. The Marist Chapter of the NSLS was founded on October 4, 2006 with 67 members. Today, there are more than 500 students associated with our Chapter.
Is the Emerging Leaders Program the same as the National Society of Leadership and Success?
The Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is a Marist run, non-credit certificate program that provides students with varied and unique opportunities to define, discover, and develop their leadership style. It is the umbrella under which the NSLS is housed.
The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) is an honor society with over 500 chapters spanning the Nation. The Society is an organization that helps people discover and achieve their goals; offers life-changing lectures from the nation’s leading presenters and a community where like-minded success oriented individuals come together and help one another succeed.
How can I earn an Emerging Leaders Certificate?
To earn an Emerging Leaders Certificate, you must attend six or more events throughout the academic year. Attending webcasts from the National Society of Leadership and Success will also count as events toward earning the certificate. Students can earn an ELP certificate on an annual basis. It is important that students register before attending the event to receive credit towards the certificate.
How do I register for any of the ELP or NSLS events at Marist?
At the beginning of each semester, you will receive an e-mail highlighting all of the events planned for the semester. This email includes both ELP and NSLS events, and you are highly encouraged to register for as many as possible. To register, simply choose the workshops or telecasts that you wish to attend on the registration page within my.Marist.edu. You will receive a confirmation email for each event that you are successfully registered for.
What if I can’t attend a speaker event for which I am registered?
If you can not longer attend a workshop or webcast, log back into your registration page in my.Marist.edu and drop the event at least 24 hours prior to the start of the event.
How do I verify my attendance if I am attending an event for a class or club?
Please pick up an Emerging Leaders business card at the end of the workshop and use it for verification.
National Society of Leadership and Success FAQs
What do I get as a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS)?
This life-long membership allows access to resources on the NSLS website, which includes awards, scholarships, customized letters of recommendation, a collection of Telecasts and other features.
Is there a fee to join NSLS?
There is a one-time $95 fee. This fee is a lifetime fee. Therefore, members are not required to pay an annual fee.
When registering for NSLS, what should I put as my GPA?
When prompted to enter your GPA upon registration, please either list your high school GPA or simply put 4.0 (which is what you begin your Marist career with).
How do I become an Inducted Member of NSLS at Marist?
To become an Inducted Member of the NSLS at Marist, you must attend orientation, register for, attend and complete at least three webcast (national speaker) events within the academic year, complete and post results for at least three consecutive meetings with your Success Networking Teams (SNTs) within one semester and attend at least three workshops from the Emerging Leaders Program within one academic year. It is recommended that students complete induction requirements within one semester as the SNT requirements will not carryover to the next semester.
What is a Success Networking Team (SNT)?
A SNT at Marist is a team of six students who meet with each other to discuss, plan and execute their long-term or short-term goals. Students who are in SNTs hold each other accountable to ensure that significant progress towards their objectives are made. SNTs have been successful because students provide guidance and support for each member of the team.
To be eligible for NSLS membership, SNT members must complete at least three consecutive meetings, which are held bi-weekly. File a report online indicating completion of this meeting within 24 hours after your meeting.
How much time does a SNT take?
SNT meetings take place at your convenience. Therefore, your team is responsible for setting times to meet. In addition the meetings typically take one hour and should be held every other week to ensure that progress was made toward the goals established.
What is Leadership Training Day?
Leadership Training Day is designed to set the tone and commitment for all Members’ involvement with the Society. At Marist, Leadership Training Day consists of attending a minimum of three workshops from the Emerging Leaders Program.
How do I report my SNT attendance?
To report your SNT attendance, you must login to the NSLS website and on the member’s row, click on “Success Networking Teams”. Answer the questions provided on the page and click on the “submit” button once you have completed your answers.
Can I keep track of my membership status?
Yes. In fact, all Members are expected to monitor their own progress. To view your membership status, you must login to the NSLS website and click on “membership status”, which will show you the requirements that have or have not been completed.
How do I create an account?
At Marist, you will receive an email inviting you to become a Pending Member for NSLS. The letter will include a personalized code that will be required to begin your online registration, which can be completed at the NSLS Invitation Page.
What should I do if I am experiencing trouble with my NSLS registration or accessing my account?
Members who are having difficulty registering or logging in to their registered accounts should contact the NSLS toll free number at (800) 601-6248 or you may contact the headquarters at (201) 222-6544.
How do I find out about NSLS award and scholarship opportunities?
To view NSLS awards and scholarships, you may login to the NSLS website and place your cursor on the “members” tab and click on the “scholarships & awards” link.
