With the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), Reem Ooka, an international student from Mumbai, India, saw an opportunity to pursue a career in a radically growing and constantly evolving field.

As a student, Reem was laser-focused on her academic work, with the goal of one day working for Google. Reemenrolled in Marist's Master's in Computer Science (MSCS) program. Aside from the beauty of Marist's campus, she explained, she was drawn to the MSCS program's rigorous curriculum and hands-on approach to learning. Her efforts would eventually lead her to become a recipient of the Summer 2024 Research Fellowship Grant, where she should be able to work on her research and dive further into the world of AI/ML. "This opportunity truly ignited my passion for the field. It had been instrumental in helping me explore my career path while gaining hands-on experience with new and exciting technologies," said Reem. As an elective within the Master in Computer Science curriculum, Reem found the Artificial Intelligence course particularly meaningful for its various approaches to problem-solving, real-world applications, and, most noteworthy, the instruction. "The professors were supportive and accessible, making me feel welcomed and encouraged to grow," she said.

If keeping up with her academic work and research didn't keep her busy enough, Reem became an orientation leader for incoming international students. "This role allowed me to enhance my social skills, connect with people from various cultural backgrounds, and gain insights into different countries," she said. As for new students, Reem advises them to "stay open to learning and to step out of your comfort zone. College is all about exploring, discovering what fits, and figuring out who you are. Don't be afraid to try new things or approach things differently from your peers—it could turn into a memorable experience and a great story to tell!"
