February 23, 2023 – You may have noticed some additions to Marist College parking lots this semester. The College has installed its first electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in several locations in lots across campus. The installation of these 16 EV charging stations is part of the College’s commitment to sustainability and environmentally responsible operations.

• Steel Plant Parking Lot 

• Fulton/Upper West Cedar Parking Lot (adjacent to the tennis courts) 

• 51 Fulton Parking Lot 

• Midrise Parking Lot

“We wanted to provide EV charging accessibility on campus as more people shift to transportation alternatives,” said Geoff Brackett, Executive Vice President at Marist College. “There are a growing number of electric vehicles on campus, and we want to make a resource available for students, staff, faculty and visitors who park here with a service that is cost-effective for drivers and easy to use.”

These parking spots are easily identified by new signage and will soon also feature green painted stripes. They operate via the ChargePointsmartphone app, which can link to a credit card. The average cost for a charge of a fully depleted 54 kWh battery would be about $12.

Justin Butwell, who serves as the co-chair of Marist’s Campus Sustainability Advisory Committee (CSAC) oversaw the installation of these chargers. CSAC, which consists of students and faculty members, played an important role in the research and installation of the charging stations, according to Butwell. CSAC continues to help drive sustainability leadership in three key areas: research and education, campus operations, and stewardship in the Marist community.

Marist was recently named among the most Environmentally Responsible Colleges by the Princeton Review due to the College’s sustainability efforts both inside and outside of the classroom.
