New Directions on the Early Dutch: Marist to Host the New Netherland Institute’s 42nd Annual Conference in October

September 6, 2019—On Saturday, October 5th, the Hudson River Valley Institute of Marist College will host the New Netherland Institute’s 2019 conference at the College’s campus.

For over three decades, the New Netherland Institute's Annual Conference, originally named the Rensselaerswijck Seminar, has showcased research into the early history and culture of the Dutch in America.  “We are excited to collaborate with the New Netherland Institute, a champion of our region’s Dutch Colonial history. And we also welcome back to campus our 2013 Handel-Krom Lecturer in Hudson River Valley History, Jaap Jacobs, who will be presenting at the conference,” said Chris Pryslopski, Program Director of the Hudson River Valley Institute.

The 2019 conference will also include presentations by Ian Stewart, Julie Van den Hout, Chelsea L. Teale, Shaun Sayres, and Michael J. Douma. Topics range from Dutch architecture to Native American relations. The full schedule is available on the Institute’s registration page.

Registration ($75) is required for the conference, and includes breakfast and lunch. There will be a dinner that evening at Coppola’s in Hyde Park with noted artist Len Tantillo speaking about his recent work at Historic Huguenot Street. Dinner requires a separate registration fee. Thanks to the generosity of the Kenney estate, students (broadly defined) can attend the conference for free (and can apply to receive travel money). More information is available here.

About the New Netherland Institute

For more than four decades, the New Netherland Institute—an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization—and its affiliates have helped shed light on the long-neglected history of the settlements that laid the foundation for much of today's mid-Atlantic region. NNI supports the New Netherland Research Center in partnership with the New York State Office of Cultural Education, the parent agency of the State Library and State Archives.
