Two New Trustees are Named

December 10, 2018—The Marist College Board of Trustees elected Denise Vanech and Greg Gartland to the Board during a meeting held on campus in November.

Denise Vanech Vanech is a philanthropist with several years of experience in human resources at Nabisco, American Express Company, and Combustion Engineering. Together with her husband, Dean, Vanech is a trustee of the Vanech Family Foundation. The foundation was established in 2003 and supports education, human services, and performing arts programs in New York and New Jersey. In 2017, the foundation endowed a scholarship at Marist as well as the Vanech Special Services Fund which meets the needs of financially disadvantaged students with learning disabilities. Vanech’s son, Nicky, is a Marist graduate. She resides in New Vernon, New Jersey.

Greg Gartland is a partner at Winston & Strawn, an international law firm Greg Gartland with nearly 1,000 attorneys in key financial centers around the world. He work in Winston’s New York and Chicago offices, where he specializes in restructuring, insolvency, lending transactions and business reorganization.  Prior to joining Winston in 2009, Gartland was an associate attorney for three years at Luskin, Stern & Eisler, a New York City law firm that specializes in bankruptcy and loan restructurings. He briefly worked at Poughkeepsie’s Corbally, Gartland & Rappleyea between 2003 and 2005. Gartland is the son and grandson of Poughkeepsie civic leaders Michael and John “Jack” Gartland (both were Marist trustees, and Jack Gartland served as chair of Marist’s Board). He resides in Poughkeepsie with his wife Ellen and their two children.

Marist President David Yellen noted how pleased he was with the addition of Vanech and Gartland to the Board. “Denise and Greg will bring significant professional expertise and valuable perspectives to our discussions. Both believe strongly in Marist’s educational mission, and we are grateful for their willingness to serve the College in this capacity.”

Vanech and Gartland will have their first meeting as Marist trustees in February 2019.
