New YorkComputer science major Shea DeCaro '26 was drawn to the caring community at Marist. Since then, she has been inspired to synthesize her technology skills to support small, local businesses.
While a student at a local community college, Shea attended one of Marist's Instant Decision Days, where she not only received acceptance, but was also given a scholarship to support her financial needs. Deciding to transfer was “so easy,” she said, noting that staff went above and beyond to address all her questions. “Seeing how much they cared only confirmed I made the right choice."
In her Software Development II class with Professor Phippen, Shea learned to treat each assignment as if it included real-life deliverables for clients. Now that she has experience combining her knowledge from lectures and labs and applying it all holistically, Shea hopes to one day design her own software program that will connect local businesses with their community. "Working with small businesses for the last few years has made me realize the importance of working together, understanding your audience, and providing a personalized experience in-store and online."
As she works to complete her degree, DeCaro is taking advantage of everything Marist has to offer. "Marist is a place that’s really never short of opportunities. Between the constant workshops happening on campus to help you with resumes and internships, to the tutoring center; if you need something, there’s someone there to help."
