Summer Pre-College: Sports Communication
Message from the Marist Summer Pre-College Sports Communication Director
Welcome to Marist and our Summer Pre-College Sports Communication Program. Here, you can write and learn about sports and the complex systems that take them from the field to your screen.
Whether it's writing a game story, practicing play-by-play, or studying the impact of corporate sponsorship in sports, at Marist, we take the growing field of sports communication seriously. If you do too, then there is no better place to spend 13 days of your summer than here. I invite you to explore our campus, study in our library, and play in our gym - in other words, immerse yourself in all that Marist has to offer.
In addition to being the Director of the program, I am currently the Director of the Center for Sports Communication (one of Marist's five Centers for Research and Engagement) and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication.
Prior to arriving at Marist, I worked for over 20 years in a variety of sports media environments, including as a Producer for ESPN Radio Network, a Senior Editor and Media Relations Officer for the world governing body for basketball and finally as a Coordinating Producer for CBS Sports in New York City. In 2024 I completed my PhD in Communications and Rhetoric at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
You will get to know me well in your time on campus but will also be instructed by working professionals in sports broadcasting and sports information, including an ESPN Studio Producer and a public relations professional with NBA experience, who will teach you hands-on skills they use on the job every day. Guest speakers from various parts of the sports industry will round out the Summer Pre-College experience.
I look forward to working with all of you!
Andy Elrick, PhD
Director of the Center for Sports Communication
Assistant Professor of Sports Communication
