Summer Pre-College: Introduction to Studio Art (Portfolio Development)

In-Person Session I: June 29 - July 12, 2025

The focus of this Summer Pre-College Program in Studio Art will be Portfolio Development. The course allows you to fully explore the process of creating your diverse portfolio starting with proper planning. Through implementation of elements of visual thinking within: form, value, proportions, perspective, composition, color theory; students will develop their own portfolios showcasing their personal style and fine craftsmanship. You will have an opportunity to explore diverse mediums of working in dry and wet mediums as well as creating an experimental project in our state of the art MakerLab space.

Students will develop an active sketchbook practice that serves as the reference for project initiation and development of a strong subject matter. Upon completion of this course, students will develop their unique professional art portfolio, in addition to having an opportunity to take part in the exhibition. Some sessions will take place outdoors, on-campus. A field trip to New York City will be included in this summer experience. Students will have an opportunity to visit one of the top museums in New York City to expand their research, in addition to experiencing and exploring the culture of New York City.

Intro. to Studio Art (Portfolio) Program Goals:

  • Develop completed art portfolio showcasing your personal style and various art mediums
  • Gain knowledge and experience of working with various aspects of drawing and painting techniques
  • Acquire an understanding and awareness of visual thinking, composition, color theory, design and proper planning within wet and dry processes
  • Develop an awareness of proper articulation about your work and work of your peers

Earn College Credit Over the Summer

Marist Summer Pre-College is geared toward sophomores and juniors in high school. Upon successful completion of the Intro to Studio Art Program, each student will earn three (3) transferable college credits for the Marist University course, ART198: Studio Art Portfolio Development.

Program Cost

Please see below for costs. Cost includes tuition & fees, housing & all meals, field trips, and all course materials. Cost does not include travel expenses. Students may wish to bring funds for incidentals, shopping at the Marist Bookstore or the local mall, souvenirs, and any personal items they wish to purchase. Students should bring a laptop for their coursework.
