Summer 2023
Summer Pre-College
A Taste of College Life: Marist’s Summer Pre-College programs offer high school students the opportunity to take college classes and live on campus as a Marist Red Fox for two weeks. Students can earn three college credits, test drive a major, and make friends.
Coming from around the country: This summer’s 270 pre-college students represented 31 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Students came from as far as Arizona, California, Oregon, and Hawaii.
New programs: Pre-College featured 20 programs, which ranged from Pre-Law to Fashion Merchandising to Creative Writing and more. There were two brand new programs this year: Robotics and the Science Behind Exercise & Movement.

Experts from Around the Country Meet to Take on Big Tech Topics
Enterprise Computing Industry and Academic Experts from across the country came to campus for the 15th Annual Enterprise Computing Community Conference to take on hot tech topics like artificial intelligence (AI), ChatGPT, virtual realities, cybersecurity, and other emerging themes in the world of enterprise computing.
Catch me up: The conference was a place for enterprise computing professionals from leading educational institutions and tech companies to network, present research, learn from expert speakers and panelists, and address the national skills shortage in large systems technology.
An unknown future rolls toward us: One leading conversation was about artificial intelligence — a fast-evolving technology that continues to impact many industries and move into uncharted tech territory. The event brought experts together to discuss the ethical uses and implications of AI and large-language model software like ChatGPT.
A surprise celebration: Dr. Roger Norton, former Dean of the School of Computer Science and Mathematics, was the principal investigator of the National Science Foundation grant, which led to the creation of the conference. Dr. Norton was presented with the Pioneer Award for his innovative contributions to the industry and for championing the creation of the conference.
Poughkeepsie Pride Parade
Proud in Poughkeepsie: Members of Marist’s LGBTQ+ community gathered with allies and other local supporters to march in the Annual Poughkeepsie Pride Parade. The parade, which began in 2019, celebrates diversity and promotes acceptance and equality.
Quick History Lesson: June is Pride Month because it commemorates the Stonewall uprising, which began on June 28, 1969, and served as a pivotal event in the LGBTQ+ rights movement that galvanized political activism in the community for decades to come.
Marist was a sponsor of the 2023 Pride Parade, which is hosted by the nonprofit, Dutchess County Pride Center. Marist parade-goers in festive attire marched through the streets behind a Marist rainbow pride flag with Frankie the Fox by their side.
Powerful, Peaceful, Purposeful: A welcoming and lively community event, the parade aimed to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ rights and issues and serve as a safe space for everyone to be celebrated, respected, and embraced.
Recommended Summer Listen: Marist Poll Celebrates 300th Podcast
Quick Background: The Marist Institute for Public Opinion launched its Poll Hub podcast with its inaugural episode on August 10, 2017. The podcast deconstructs how polling works and what the numbers really mean. Since then, Poll Hub has covered a wide range of topics, focusing on politics and current affairs.
All About The Students: Since its inception, Poll Hub has incorporated students into all aspects of production, from planning topics to multimedia editing to on-air presentation. This anniversary episode was produced exclusively by Marist Poll student media assistants.
Name That Tune: The 300th episode of Poll Hub features a wide-ranging discussion of… music! The podcast covers music and science, music and life, music and time, and even those wonderful earworms. "This topic emerged from an earlier episode," said Marist Poll Director Dr. Lee Miringoff. "It sparked an engaging discussion among us, and our superstar team of students took the idea and ran with it."
