Civil Air Patrol Academic Partnership

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) was founded on December 1, 1941, just six days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. The effort of two men to organize the nation’s civilian pilots in preparation for the threat of war was realized, and almost 200,000 men and women volunteered for CAP duty during the war. After World War II, CAP was chartered by Congress as a benevolent nonprofit organization and became the auxiliary of the new United States Air Force in 1947. Today, the CAP Board of Governors, comprised of representatives from the Air Force, CAP, and industry provides direction at a national level, as CAP pursues its post-war missions.

Civil Air Patrol has three missions. The first is Emergency Services, which includes air and ground search and rescue, disaster relief, aerial reconnaissance, homeland security, assistance to law enforcement, and Air Force operational support. The second is the dedication to their Cadet Program where young men and women, ages 12 to 21, develop leadership skills in preparation to become tomorrow's leaders in an aerospace-oriented world. The third is Aerospace Education, where CAP educates the public, as well as CAP cadets and adult members in a variety of topics related to aerospace. CAP also supports school teachers, helping them incorporate aerospace education into their classes.

As a way of saying "thank you" to Civil Air Patrol members and employees who reside in our community, Marist College is offering special tuition pricing for all Civil Air Patrol members, employees, and their immediate adult family members.

Marist College Online Master of Public Administration (MPA) Degree Program

We offer two start dates for this online program. Apply by December 1 to start in January or apply by August 1 to start in September.

Marist College has offered the MPA degree since 1980 and, for over 20 years, has partnered with public agencies in New York State. As part of the academic partnership between Marist College and Civil Air Patrol, the MPA will be delivered as an online degree program to assist personnel who are unable to attend traditional courses at our satellite locations or prefer the convenience of online learning.

MPA Program Structure

Marist’s MPA degree program meets the needs of the busy professional by combining accelerated scheduling and a reduced pricing structure with the flexibility and convenience of Marist’s online course delivery system. Students in this program represent a diverse mix of public sector professionals from local, state, and federal agencies throughout the nation. This combination of experience provides for an intensely rich and beneficial learning experience and allows students the opportunity to widen their professional networks.

The MPA program is comprised of 39-42 credits of graduate coursework (13-14 courses). Students with less than two years of work experience in the public or non-profit sectors will be required to complete a Public Administration internship. All MPA courses are eight weeks in length and offered Spring, Summer, and Fall. Semester breaks are included. The entire graduate degree program can be completed in just over two years.
