Application to Graduate

All eligible candidates should have submitted a completed Application for Graduation form to the Registrar’s office by November 27, 2023. At this time only students who are completing this spring can submit a late application. All others are open to apply for next year's ceremony.  If you are unsure if you submitted yours, please contact GraduationApplications@marist.edu.

Name Recording

Marist wants to make sure each name called on Commencement day is pronounced correctly. On or about April 4, students will receive an email introducing them to MarchingOrder, an organization working with Marist to record graduate names. Students will first be asked to register on the site and set up a unique password. Once registered, you will be able to access the site and provide the correct pronunciation of your name. If you have questions, please call the Media Center at (845) 575-3635.

Deadline: April 22.

Commencement Slideshow

Use the email Marching Order sent to you to create a video slide with a photograph, collage, and personalized message to be shown during Commencement’s pre-ceremony slideshow and featured on our virtual ceremony website for guests who watch from home. You can upload your photograph and enter your personalized message using the same vendor that does name pronunciation recordings.

Dual Degree Program Graduates

If you will receive BOTH a bachelor’s and a master’s degree at the same time, you should order both sets of regalia.  Place two separate orders.

Accessories

Graduates are required to wear academic regalia while participating in the Commencement ceremony. In addition to the cap, gown, and hood students may wear the following:

  • items of cultural significance;
  • accessories earned for academic distinction; or
  • accessories provided by the College for participation in clubs, organizations, athletics teams, or other affiliated activities.

Common accessories include medals, cords, sashes, stoles, and pins. All decorations and accessories must align with Marist community standards.

Herff Jones doesn’t supply gown accessories, such as cords, sashes, stoles, and pins. If you think you may be eligible for an accessory through participation in the Honors Program, study abroad, an honor society, or for other reasons, please reach out to that department directly.

How to Properly Wear Regalia

To see how to wear your regalia properly, watch this tutorial video here.

Lineup Cards

All graduates must have a lineup card to participate in the Commencement ceremony. Distribution of lineup cards will take place during the week of Commencement.

A lineup card indicates that a student is eligible to graduate. Information contained on the card will help the student find their place in lineup for the academic procession. The lineup card contains a bar code that will trigger the students name recording to be read as they cross the stage. Students will not be allowed to line up or cross the stage without a lineup card. The Registrar’s office should be contacted immediately if a lineup card is lost.

Helpful Hints: Cords, Tassels, and Other Attire

  • Your tassel should be worn on the right until all graduates have crossed the stage and President Weinman confers all degrees.
  • Remember the ground and stage can get wet, even if it’s not raining. Please wear sensible shoes.
  • The weather can be unpredictable, so remember both your umbrella and your sunblock.
  • Graduates should be cautious of the clothes they wear underneath their gowns. Neither the College nor the manufacturer guarantees that they are colorfast.
