Academic Core
Foreign Language Study in the Marist Core
While the Marist Core does not require foreign language courses, it does provide students with many opportunities to pursue proficiency in a language they have already studied, or to begin exploring a new one. Please note that the curricular options below may overlap with requirements for foreign language majors and/or minors.
Option #1
Students who have previously studied Spanish, French, or Italian may choose a Pathway focusing on advanced study in these languages. These Pathways include courses beginning at the “Intermediate II” level of study.
Option #2
Students may choose a Pathway that includes foreign language study along with other disciplinary approaches to a particular culture, region, or time period. These Pathways include:
- Contemporary European Studies: Students may apply a maximum of language courses in German, Italian, French, Spanish, or another European language at any level of study (including Elementary I).
- Italian & Italian-American Studies: Students may apply a maximum of two Italian language courses at any level (including Elementary I).
- Latin American & Caribbean Studies: Students may apply a maximum of two Spanish or French language courses at the Intermediate I level and beyond.
- Medieval and Renaissance Studies: Students may apply a maximum of two language courses in Greek, Latin, or Arabic at the Elementary I level or beyond, OR they could apply a maximum of two language courses in French, Spanish, German, or Italian at the Intermediate I level and beyond.
- Global Studies: Students may apply a maximum of two courses in any foreign language at any level of study.
Option #3
Even if students choose a Pathway that does not include foreign languages, they can still use language courses to fulfill their distribution requirements.
If students have “double-dipped” any courses between their Breadth and Pathway, they will need additional courses to reach the required distribution threshold of 36 credits. Foreign language courses at any level (including Elementary I) may be used to reach this number of credits.
