About Our Club
The Sikh Student Association (SSA) at Marist University is committed to building a community grounded in service, unity, and cultural understanding. We aim to educate our peers about Punjabi culture, celebrate the teachings of Sikhism, and foster connections among students from diverse backgrounds.
At the heart of Sikhism is the concept of Ik Onkar ੴ, meaning "There is only one God." This
central tenet teaches unity, equality, and the interconnectedness of all people, regardless of religion, race, or background. It emphasizes the importance of respecting all religions, cultures, and identities, and fighting against injustices wherever they may arise. Guided by the core Sikh values of Vand Chakna (sharing with others) and Seva (selfless service), SSA promotes a culture of compassion, inclusivity, and justice. These principles are at the core of our efforts to enrich the Marist community and contribute to a more just and equal society for all.
Through the SSA, students have the opportunity to connect, learn, and grow together, creating a welcoming space where cultural differences are celebrated, and stereotypes are challenged. We are dedicated to cultivating an environment of respect, love, and understanding, empowering all to engage with one another in meaningful ways.

Message from the Founder - Simrat Mangat:
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! ☬
The Sikh Student Association was founded on the principles of unity, learning, and service. In
Sikhi, we are taught that all of humanity is one, and it is our duty to stand for justice and truth,
no matter the circumstances. We strive to create a space where everyone—regardless of race,
religion, or background—feels welcome, supported, and empowered to raise their voice against injustice.
"ਮਾਨਸ ਕੀ ਜਾਤ ਸਭੈ ਏਕੈ ਪਹਚਾਨਬੋ"
"Recognize the whole human race as one." – Guru Gobind Singh Ji
We believe in living with truth and integrity, standing firm in our values, and uplifting those
around us. When we walk the path of righteousness, no force can bring us down, for true strength
comes from unwavering faith.
"ਿਜਸ ਦਾ ਸਾਿਹਬ ਡਾਢਾ ਹੋਇ , ਿਤਸ ਨੰ ੂ ਮਾਿਰ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਇ। "
"One whose Master is the Giver—no one can bring them down." – Guru Arjan Dev Ji
No matter where you come from, you have a place here. Let’s rise together, speak up, stand
strong, serve with compassion, and never be afraid to fight for what is just.

Message from Damanjit Singh:
One of the most powerful aspects of Sikhi is its unwavering belief in equality—not just among
races and backgrounds, but also between genders. Guru Nanak Dev Ji emphasized the respect
and dignity of women at a time when society often disregarded them. His words remind us that
no one should be looked down upon based on gender, for from women, all of humanity is born.
"Why call her bad, when from her, kings are born?" – Guru Nanak Dev Ji
Sikhi teaches that men and women are equal in every way—in spirituality, leadership, and
strength. It is our responsibility to uphold this truth, challenge outdated norms, and create a
world where everyone, regardless of gender, race, or background, is treated with respect.
At SSA, we strive to foster an environment that reflects these values—one where everyone has a
voice, everyone belongs, and no one is seen as lesser. Together, we stand for justice, equality,
and Sarbat da Bhala (the welfare of all).
Chardi Kala,
Damanjit Singh

Punjabi culture, Sikhism, and to connect with others. I think SSA is very welcoming regardless
of background. And is a space for learning, community, and service. Through SSA I’ve been
able to learn others way of life and perspective. SSA is a great club for anyone wanting to learn
more about others and experience different perspectives!
