Dr. Neil Fitzgerald Named Inaugural Joseph T. Negler '70 Chair

February 18, 2025 — The School of Science is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Neil Fitzgerald as the inaugural Joseph T. Negler '70 Chair in Science, the School's first endowed position. This prestigious role, which was made possible by a generous gift from Mr. Negler will attract and retain distinguished faculty who are national experts in their fields and dedicated educators and supports the personal and professional development of both faculty and students through this endowment.
Dr. Fitzgerald, a Professor of Chemistry and Associate Dean of the School of Science, teaches courses in analytical chemistry, research methods, environmental chemistry, and general chemistry. He has also led short-term abroad programs in environmental chemistry and co-taught a Chemistry of Fine Art course that included travel to London and Paris.
“I am deeply honored to be named as the inaugural Joseph T. Negler '70 Chair in Science,” said Dr. Fitzgerald. ”Mr. Negler’s support of science at Marist and lifetime of dedication as an engineer, member of the military, and IBM employee are truly inspirational. I plan to use this position to further the mission of the University by supporting the personal and professional development of faculty and students while holding true to the values of Marist University as set down by the Marist brothers.”
Trained as an analytical chemist, Dr. Fitzgerald has published research in atomic spectrometry, environmental analysis, and chemical education. His recent work focuses on the analysis and authentication of foods and beverages using analytical chemistry techniques and chemometric methods.

Mr. Negler passed away in 2022. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2008 from Marist, the highest honor for a Marist graduate.
