Admission Requirements
Marist College has developed two options for students pursuing a graduate degree in Athletic Training, a standalone 2-year Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) program and an accelerated, combined 5-year BS/MSAT dual degree program that results in students earning both the Bachelor of Science in Biology and the MSAT.
Letters of Reference
Two letters of reference attesting to the applicant’s academic ability and interest in athletic training must be received in order for an application to be complete. This form is to be completed and submitted by a non-relative professional reference, including a professor, employer, or athletic trainer with whom a clinical observation was performed. This individual should be able to attest to your character, strengths/weaknesses, integrity, and work ethic. Letters of Reference should be uploaded with your ATCAS application.
All students applying to the Marist's MSAT program will do so via the Athletic Training Centralized Application System.
In order to be considered, applications must be complete in ATCAS. Materials required are: Personal Statement, Resume, Official Transcripts, and Letters of Reference.
Two-year MSAT program
To be accepted into the standalone two-year MSAT program, candidates must have achieved a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or an equivalent institution. A baccalaureate degree is a minimum requirement; therefore, a masters or doctorate level degree awarded in lieu of a baccalaureate degree will meet this requirement. The following undergraduate courses must also be completed:
- Anatomy & Physiology I and II: 4 credits each, including applicable labs
- General Biology I and II: 4 credits each, including applicable labs
- General Chemistry I and II: 4 credits each, including applicable labs
- Physics I and II: 4 credits each, including applicable labs
- Psychology: 3 credits
- Statistics: 3 credits
The academic standard for admission is a 3.0 GPA overall, combined with a 3.0 GPA for science prerequisite courses. All of the above courses must be completed with grades of “C” or above. Please note that a “C-” will not be accepted. All prerequisite courses must be completed before an application in ATCAS is submitted for verification. Submission of the following documentation is also required:
- TOEFL score (if high school graduate of a non-English speaking country)
- Official transcripts from all colleges attended
- Minimum of 60 hours of volunteer or work-related athletic training experience. The hours must be in a minimum of two different settings under the supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer;
- Completed application through Athletic Training Central Application Service (ATCAS);
- On-campus interview.
Five-year BS/MSAT dual degree
Students will matriculate into the combined 5-year BS/MSAT dual degree program as first-year and will be admitted to the BS in Biology and MSAT track according to standard admissions procedures and policies. A separate Academic Status Policy for the combined 5-year BS/MSAT dual degree program is as follows,
At the end of the junior year (May of Year 3), students will be reviewed for transition and retention into the graduate and professional phase of the dual degree program. To be enrolled in the MSAT and the graduate level courses, students must have completed at least 96 hours of undergraduate courses by the end of the junior year including the following:
- Anatomy & Physiology I and II: 4 credits each, including applicable labs
- General Biology I and II: 4 credits each, including applicable labs
- General Chemistry I and II: 4 credits each, including applicable labs
- Physics I and II: 4 credits each, including applicable labs
- Psychology: 3 credits
- Statistics: 3 credits
A cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 and a 3.0 GPA for the science courses listed above is required for transition and retention into the graduate and professional phase of the dual degree program. Additionally, all of the above courses must be completed with grades of “C” or above (C- will not be accepted). Candidates must also complete a minimum of 60 hours of volunteer or work-related athletic training experience. The hours must be in a minimum of two different settings under the supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer.
