Institutional Peer and Aspirant Lists
These lists were created to benchmark Marist’s current standing and future progress compared to our closest peers and aspirational institutions.
Peer institutions were identified based on similarities in educational mission, as well as characteristics reported to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) including: institutional control (public vs. private), geographic location, Carnegie classification, degree of urbanization, highest degree offered, geography, selectivity, undergraduate and graduate enrollment, instructional and non-instructional staff size, faculty-to-student-ratio, student outcomes (retention and graduation rates), and financial resources. Special consideration was also given to institutions that share significant admissions overlap.
Aspirational institutions were also identified based on certain characteristics reported to IPEDS, as they share some fundamental likenesses with Marist (e.g., institutional control, geography, program mix). They have also achieved something(s) Marist would like to emulate (e.g., superior student outcomes, academic reputation, financial resources).
These lists were compiled after a thorough analysis of the data points identified above and reviewed and endorsed by the Board of Trustees in February 2024. They are not intended to be universal, as other peer groups may be more appropriate to consult for discrete benchmarking exercises, especially those involving precise comparisons to specific divisions or academic departments.
