Yumiko Ogawa

Associate Professor, Psychology and Program Director of MA Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program

Bio

Her passion to be a better play therapist brought her from Tokyo, Japan to Denton, TX over 20 years ago. Dr. Ogawa earned her Ph.D. from University of North Texas which houses the biggest play therapy training program in the world.  She has worked with children and their families in various settings including hospital, agencies, private practices, schools and disaster response sites.  Her work with undocumented and unaccompanied minors was mentioned in the United States Senate Floor.  Being an immigrant in the U.S. entailed a grave identify shift for her from being an individual in a dominant group to an individual in a minoritized group. This shift  was an eye opening experience and it ignited her passion for combatting injustices and inequalities, particularly  in the field of counseling. Currently Dr. Ogawa is an associate professor, counselor educator, and director of the MA Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. She has been a counselor educator over 15 years and a mental health clinician for over 25 years. As her self-care strategies, she enjoys running and playing and performing Taiko (Japanese drumming).
