Marist Abroad: Program Petition Process

Program Petitions

Students who study abroad through Marist Abroad remain registered at Marist College and receive resident credit. The College has made a commitment to support study abroad through the ability to carry much of one's financial aid to a program in the Marist Abroad approved program portfolio, as well as the ability to complete core, and in many cases major and/or minor, requirements on approved programs overseas.

The Marist Abroad office maintains a portfolio of semester and academic year programs which have been vetted according to international education best practice and the needs of the College's students. This portfolio is reviewed by Marist Abroad staff every summer, and is available on the Marist Abroad website. A partial list of criteria used in the program review process would include a review of the academics of a program, the administrative model, local staff support and structure, safety and security, quality of student services, integration with the local community and culture, institutional, national, and international affiliations, Marist Abroad capacity for monitoring and evaluation, institutional standing and reputation within the field of international education, and substantive opportunities for students to develop the Student Learning Outcomes outlined on our website.

Information on best practice in international education, used in Marist Abroad program review, can be found through the publications and websites of NAFSA (The Association of International Educators), OSAC (Overseas Security Advisory Council), IES (The Institute for the International Education of Students), CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange), and The Forum on Education Abroad.

It is possible for students to submit a petition for Marist Abroad review of a program not currently available in the Marist Abroad portfolio of approved programs. It is strongly preferred that such petitions be submitted for programs offered by one of Marist International Program's institutional affiliates:

How to Submit a Petition

If you would like to apply for Marist Abroad review of one of these institutions' semester or academic year abroad programs, or another study abroad program not offered by one of these affiliates, you may do so.

Applicants should send an e-mail to international@marist.edu with the following information to request Marist Abroad review of a program:

  1. In the subject line of the e-mail, write: "Petition for Marist Abroad Review," followed by the program name, program location, your name, and the semester and year you wish to study abroad.
  2. In the body of the message discuss your rationale for choosing the particular program, location, and how the program fits your educational objectives (course offerings, career plan, personal interests, etc.).
  3. Discuss any interaction or discussion you have had with your Academic Advisor in relation to the program.

Program review may take 2-3 weeks or more. It is your responsibility to confirm that your e-mail requesting expedited review has been received. Please note that a request for expedited Marist Abroad review does not guarantee program approval.

Once you have submitted the petition request (above), students should begin completing the Marist Abroad application. Please note: students must first apply and be accepted to participate in Marist Abroad before starting an abroad institution's application.
