The Hudson River Valley Review’s Fall Issue is Available Now
A publication of the College’s Hudson River Valley Institute, this issue features color reproductions of Thomas Cole paintings.
December 1, 2020—The new issue of the peer-reviewed regional history publication The Hudson River Valley Review includes vibrant color reproductions of Thomas Cole’s paintings. These pages are included thanks to the generosity of Shaileen and Tony Kopec, longtime supporters of the Review. The paintings illustrate author H. Daniel Peck’s exploration of Cole’s dedication to the Catskills via his paintings of Catskill Creek, an article adapted from his 2019 Handel-Krom Lecture in Hudson River Valley History, delivered at Marist College. One of Cole’s concerns was the impact of progress on the region’s pristine natural landscapes.
Progress and nature serve as themes for the issue, which also includes the following essays:
- Wyatt Erchak reappraises the meanings of progress and progressivism in late nineteenth-century Albany as it played out in public transportation.
- While Robert Moses is notorious for his planning work in and around New York City, historian Alan Strauber investigates the expansion of Moses’ empire of parks and parkways in the Hudson River Valley.
- In the essay, “Dawn Chorus: Reliving FDR’s Wartime Birding at Thompson Pond,” local author Susan Fox Rogers reflects that even wartime presidents needed an occasional morning off to listen to the world as it awakens.
- The Regional History Symposium examines the Poughkeepsie Regatta and its legacy on the sport and Hudson River rowing.
As always, the issue is rounded out with book reviews and a listing of New and Noteworthy titles about the region. A preview of the issue is available online at: www.hudsonrivervalley.org/back-issues.
