Loik Makuza '25 is all about building community and belonging.
Born in Belgium, raised in Rwanda, and graduated high school in Buffalo, the aspiring entrepreneur loves to build businesses and relationships wherever he is – and he knows the two go hand-in-hand.
- "Entrepreneurship feels like it's in my blood," said Loik. "My grandfather and father both started their own businesses, and I grew up wanting to create something of my own. I'm excited to bring what I've learned at Marist back to my family and community in Rwanda."
A holistic college experience
For Makuza, personal growth and connections were shaped by his time both in the classroom and with classmates.
- Already building businesses: The business major opted to focus on entrepreneurship and finance, which he's already putting into practice by helping a friend back home in Rwanda start an educational nonprofit and another friend launch a cab business.
- "My goal is to bring this entrepreneurial knowledge back home to impact my community in Rwanda after I earn my master's degree."
- While also building lifelong relationships: "Marist offers so much more than just academics," he said. "It's a place that helps you get involved in so many ways. The support, friendships, and opportunities I've had here are something I'll carry with me for the rest of my life."
Fuel for the mind, body, and soul
Makuza said the variety of activities he's been able to join is what really fuels him and gives him balance. "Sports help me unwind, clubs introduce me to people who share my interests, and student government gives me a way to give back. Each activity connects me to different parts of campus life, balancing academics with social experiences."
- No shortage of opportunities: His list of activities is as diverse as it is long.
- Student Government Association; the African Student Organization and International Student Association; club sports, including basketball, soccer, and volleyball.
- He's particularly proud of the leadership role he played organizing Mon Afrique, a student-led event celebrating African culture. It's become one of the most popular events on campus, highlighting Marist's openness to learning about and celebrating different cultures.
- Makuza also has a creative side, drawn to outlets like playing guitar, writing poetry, and even crocheting—a hobby he recently picked up thanks to a creative club at the library. He hopes to submit some of his poetry to Marist's literary magazine, Mosaic, next semester.
LISTEN: Loik talks about the beauty of the Marist campus, and how it both calms him and inspires him in his day-to-day academic and social life.
"It's just a beaufitul view. It puts you in a better mood throughout the day."
7,000 miles apart, but he feels right at home
Even though his family is halfway around the world in Rwanda, Makusa said Marist was the perfect fit for him and gave him that sense of community he's always looking for. "I knew I wanted small class sizes and a close-knit campus environment," he said.
- Family endorsement: While Marist was not initially on his radar, he said his mother’s enthusiasm for the university was based on its beauty and academic offerings, combined with a strong recommendation from a family friend.
- International student support: That endorsement lived up to expectations, especially given the support he said he received as an international student far from home.
- "I've found tremendous support here. Marist's International Office made my transition seamless, assisting with visa arrangements, transportation, and cultural orientation. The international student community here is tight-knit—we support each other and make sure no one feels alone."
Well-rounded and well-grounded
Reflecting on his Marist experience with graduation only months away, Makuza said he sees how much he's grown thanks to all the experiences he's had.
- Freedom to shape who you become: "People who knew me when I first arrived notice it too," he said. "This campus has helped me connect with others and learn more about myself. Whatever path I take, I'll always be grateful to Marist for shaping who I am today and for giving me the freedom to explore my interests."
