January 21, 2025  — Students from the Marist Advertising Association (MAA) traveled to New York City to attend the 2024 Student Advertising Career Conference, hosted by the American Advertising Federation (AAF).

The MAA is a student-run organization dedicated to offering hands-on experiences for students passionate about advertising. The club organizes a variety of activities, including agency visits, career fairs, workshops, networking events, student competitions, and conferences like the AAF's Student Advertising Career Conference.

Industry Immersion
During their trip, students were able to visit top agencies like Interactive Advertising Bureau, OMD, GroupM, and Sony Music Group.

“Getting to form personal relationships with professionals and touring the offices gave me a real feel for what it could be like to work for one of these companies,” said Chris Walsh '26, communication major with a concentration in advertising. “I truly believe these behind-the-scenes opportunities were the most impactful.”

Students discussed how they had limitless opportunities to build their network with professionals ranging from junior positions all the way up to C-suite executives.

“The in-person networking opportunities were especially impactful, as they allowed me to engage directly with industry leaders, ask questions, and gain insights I couldn’t get anywhere else,” said Julia DiBenedetto '25, communication major with a concentration in advertising.

Commitment to Experiential Learning
This experiential learning trip was made possible by an endowment from the Dr. Mary Louise Bopp Communication Internship Fund at Marist, and the office of Academic Affairs.

Julia DiBenedetto '25 explained that Joanna D’Avanzo, Senior Professional Lecturer of Advertising and trip coordinator, “encourages us to seek out hands-on learning experiences and foster a supportive environment that prioritizes professional growth.”

“Students participating in the AAF’s Student Advertising Career Conference had a unique opportunity to enhance their on-campus learning by seeing concepts from their classes brought to life in the professional world,” said D’Avanzo. “Engaging with industry professionals and observing their work allows students to bridge the gap between theory and practice, enriching their educational journey and providing valuable insights to bring back to campus.”

From Competition to Career Readiness
Students from across the country attending the conference participated in sessions led by guest speakers from leading marketing firms. They had the unique opportunity to engage with the speakers through a Q&A session before breaking into teams for a creative competition.

After forming teams and brainstorming in quick meetings, the groups pitched their ideas to the entire conference, receiving constructive feedback from industry professionals.

The MAA prioritizes experiential learning, with a strong focus on student participation in renowned competitions. This conference served as excellent preparation for Marist students as they gear up for the nationwide Young Ones campaign competition, hosted by The One Club for Creativity.

In the past, MAA students have earned Young Ones Silver Pencil Awards and achieved recognition as finalists in the competition.
