March 25, 2025 — As artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes industries and transforms daily life at an unprecedented pace, Marist University is taking a proactive approach to preparing students.

Launching this fall, the cross-disciplinary minor in Applied AI will provide students across majors with the technical knowledge, ethical frameworks, and practical skills needed to thrive in an increasingly AI-driven world.

“Our goal is to equip students with a deep understanding of AI while fostering critical thinking skills that enable them to evaluate and apply these technologies responsibly within their fields,” said Dr. Carolyn Matheus, Professor of Information Systems, co-chair of Marist + AI Academics, and lead faculty for the AI minor.

“As AI literacy becomes as essential as traditional literacy, this minor will empower students to be thoughtful, informed decision-makers in an increasingly AI-driven world,” she said.

The minor’s curriculum emphasizes how AI can enhance human capabilities rather than replace them. Its flexible design ensures the program can evolve alongside advancing AI technologies.

"Designing curriculum around such a rapidly evolving field presents unique challenges," said Dr. Kevin Gaugler, Assistant Dean of the School of Liberal Arts, co-chair of Marist + AI Steering Committee, and supporting faculty member for the AI minor.

"We've created a framework that focuses on enduring principles while remaining adaptable enough to incorporate emerging developments. The question isn't just what AI can do today, but what ethical and practical considerations will shape its impact tomorrow," he said.

Program Structure and Learning Objectives
The program will foster AI literacy by covering foundational principles, ethical considerations for responsible use, and practical skills to evaluate, apply, and develop AI solutions for real-world challenges.

Students will complete three required courses—AI Literacy, Ethical and Social Issues of AI, and AI Applications—along with three electives from offerings across disciplines. This interdisciplinary approach prepares graduates to address AI’s implications across industries, meeting the rising demand for professionals with AI expertise.

The Minor in Applied AI advances key priorities outlined in the Marist 100 strategic plan, embodying the University's commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary programming while enhancing students' capabilities as critical thinkers and communicators.

By equipping students with the technical understanding and ethical foundations necessary to navigate AI's growing influence, Marist continues its tradition of developing forward-thinking programs to ensure graduates are prepared to succeed in an AI-transformed future.
