New YorkLuke Sassa, '25, leveraged opportunities from Marist's Center for Sports Communication and his on-campus involvement to secure a role as a Content Coordinator with SportsNet New York (SNY).
Luke chose Marist because it offered hands-on learning experiences that supported his aspirations to work in sports media. Marist's small class sizes made the sports communication program ideal. Luke recommends students interested in the industry get involved with Center Field and The Red Fox Report, both student-run sports publications.
"Doing so will not only allow you to develop career-relevant skills but also help you to meet many like-minded people and form valuable relationships," he explained.
His experience with Center Field allowed him to explore various areas, including writing, editing, photography, social media management, magazine layout, and, eventually, editorial leadership.
"My time with Center Field molded me into a young professional ready to begin my career in sports media, and it helped me form a network of peers that I'll lean on throughout my career," Luke said.
One of Luke's most memorable experiences was going on a student trip to the Super Bowl LIX Media Week in New Orleans.
"While in New Orleans for the Super Bowl, my peers and I had direct access to some of the biggest names in sports, which enabled us to create content that enhanced our portfolios."
Luke's experience with the Center for Sports Communication, which prepares students have successful careers in the sports industry, and his work with Center Field ultimately led to an internship with SNY, which turned into a job offer with the company.
"If you want to kickstart your career in sports media, choose Marist—you won't regret it."
