January 26, 2022 — Throughout the month of February, the College will be hosting events in celebration of Black History Month. As an institution that promotes diversity across our community, Black History Month is one way we ensure Black Americans are celebrated for their achievements and our community is given the opportunity to gain a cultural perspective that is so important in our nation.

Throughout the month, the Center for Multicultural Affairs and HEOP program will host three events that are open to Students, Faculty, and Staff to attend. Throughout the month the below events will take place: 

• On February 2, Brandon Mitchell, Co-Founder and William Sims Co-Founder/CEO The Freedom Unit, on “Tips from a BIPOC Owned Enterprise” from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm.
• On February 23, Dr. Addrain Conyers will moderate a discussion between Doy Gorton and his wife, Dr. Jane Adams, to examine his photography throughout the late ’60s and early ’70s at 7:00 pm. Gorton is donating the photographs to the College following an exhibit. 
• On March 1, LaTosha Brown will explore the impact of younger and more diverse voters on democracy, examining if identity politics will play a role in unifying or widening the political divide in America at 7:00 pm.

Additionally, the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences will be hosting a collection of workshops and activities catered to continuing conversations from the First Year Common Read, Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man.

These events for First Year Students will take place from February 7 to 9 and will cover topics such as “Your Presence is Requested: How to be an Ally”, “The House Always Wins: Systematic Racism”, and “Breaking the Huddle: How to End Racism.” 

Black History Month is a time to recognize the accomplishments of Black Americans and for the Marist community to come together and learn how to best serve one another.

• February 8 from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm: Good Trouble: Fighting for Change
• February 8 from 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm: The False Start White Privilege
• February 9 from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm: Good Trouble: Fighting for Change & What Do You See When You See Me?: Implicit Bias 
• February 9 from 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm: Breaking the Huddle: How to End Racism
• February 23 at 7:00 pm: Examining White Anti-Segregationists Through Photography
• March 1 at 7:00 pm: Who Will Save American Democracy? The Role of Women, Young Voters and People of Color in American Politics
